Fantasy And Sci-Fi Books: April Box

The April Box theme is Aliens, Aliens, Aliens. I love a great Aliens story! After all, once you are out in the ‘verse, who isn’t an alien?

For those of you who haven’t heard about Fantasy and Sci-Fi Book subscription box, it is a monthly subscription box that sends a new release YA Sci-fi or Fantasy book with 3 or more related items, some of which are custom made for theme of the month. It is fabulously curated by Theresa and her husband who share our geeky love of the Sci-Fi & Fantasy genre.

Fantasy and SciFi logo
From Theresa: My Husband and I started this business to share our love of books with the world. While we love many types of books, we have a special place in our heart for anything Fantasy and Science Fiction related. We also love subscription boxes. However, we noticed that some subscription boxes send items that are not worth the money or not useful. We wanted the box we sent to our readers to be special. We wanted the items to be exciting, useful and definitely worth the money.

We carefully pick the book. We painstakingly pick the items that go with the book. Some items we ship will be specially made just for our readers. Some readers may be hesitant to order a subscription book box because they may not like the genre of book they get their box. We only send Fantasy or Sci-fi books so readers will know EXACTLY what type of book they are getting. However, the reader will still have the surprise of not knowing which book or what awesomely fun items they are receiving.

Book Review: Anna and The French Kiss

Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris–until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all…including a serious girlfriend.

But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?

This book completely caught me by surprise. It is incredibly lovely.

Anna is a very real and relatable. I adore her spunk! Her father decides to send her to the School of America in Paris, France her senior year and this turns her entire world upside down. She leaves behind her mother and brother in Atlanta, Georgia, her best friend Bridgette and the cute co-worker Toph at the movie theater. Paris, is intimidating at first. She doesn’t know anyone at school, she doesn’t know the language and it’s her first time being on her own. She befriends her neighbour in the dorms, Meredith and is quickly accepted into her little group of friends. As much as this story is about Anna and her growing up and beginning to find herself, it’s also about a first love and the craziness that comes along with it.

Etienne St. Clair is that boy everyone knows, everyone loves (and those that don’t love him are just plain envious), with his easy smile and endless charm. He is the boy off limits as he already has a girlfriend. But there is no denying the mutual growing attraction between himself and Anna. As she finds her way through this incredible experience of living in Paris, the city of love, I was drawn along with her. It’s their journey to each other that’s amazing. Navigating the high school drama and real life problems that come up, becoming best friends and finding themselves in love with each other that just completely had me rooting for them both by the end of the story.

Who hasn’t been there at some point in life? Where miscommunication and timing just didn’t seem to be in the right place?

This book left me feeling giddy and hopeful and I loved every minute of it.

Book Review: Maybe Someday

At twenty-two years old, Sydney is enjoying a great life: She’s in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her best friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers that Hunter is cheating on her—and she’s forced to decide what her next move should be.

Soon, Sydney finds herself captivated by her mysterious and attractive neighbor, Ridge. She can’t take her eyes off him or stop listening to the passionate way he plays his guitar every evening out on his balcony. And there’s something about Sydney that Ridge can’t ignore, either. They soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one.

A passionate tale of friendship, betrayal, and romance, Maybe Someday will immerse readers in Sydney’s tumultuous world from the very first page.

I finally see what all the fuss is about concerning Colleen Hoover books! I absolutely love this book, Ridge and Maggie, Sydney, Warren and the songs…. It’s just amazing! I was pulled into this story completely and pretty much read it in one night.

I love that Sydney and Ridge found a growing friendship through music and that it opened them both up to each other. Sydney learning about Ridge’s past through the music and asking questions no one else really addressed his way was a great way to tell us about his past. I still cannot believe that they connected so deeply so quickly. Those types of relationships are so rare. It was heartbreaking how much they both care about Maggie and doing things the right way even though the heart wants what it wants.

Maggie was an amazing character and she brought a depth to Ridge and Sydney’s growing attraction that most “love triangles” are missing. It was all very very real. I did enjoy that Ridge and Sydney were so open with each other even though that openness did come back to haunt them.

Overall a great read. Definitely something I want to read again. The music in the book is available to listen to while reading and that was an EXCELLENT addition. I actually bought the album because I love it and it feels like I have a bit of Sydney and Ridge with me.

Book Review: The Cuckoo’s Calling

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you’ve never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you’ve never seen them under an investigation like this. Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book and I was trying not too expect too much. Like most Potter fans I do miss the series and new book releases pertaining to that incredible world J.K. Rowling has created. I knew, going into this book, it was not going to be at all the same.

Boy was I wrong. Each Potter book is essentially a who-done-it mystery and that is one thing J.K. Rowling does exceptionally well.

Her cast of characters are equal parts funny and heart breaking, villainous and down right human. Cormoran Strike is rather unique individual. Handicapped from the war and a retired army man, he is struggling to keep his business afloat while dealing with a high strung ex-fiance. Cormoran is hired to investigate the high-profile death of a super model. While delving into the family’s complicated and sordid past he must dodge the drama, rumors and paparazzi.

I really enjoyed the build up, I loved reading his interviews and seeing a little bit more into how his mind works. I especially adore his secretary Robin and would LOVE to see more of her in the next book. I can’t wait to see where this series goes. It definitely reminds of my Agatha Christie obsession when I was younger! An over all great read.

Recommended to: Anyone who loves a great mystery/thriller.
