Book Review: Secrets of Moldara

Review:

• Paperback: 349 pages
• Publisher: Myth Machine (June 19, 2018)

This book combines the feel of a contemporary given it’s modern day setting with elements of fantasy mixed in. It’s done so well! I absolutely love the way the fantasy and magic elements a are worked in. It’s done gradually and over the length of the story. The magic and mystery is also slowly explained with such wonderful pacing!
The cast of characters are absolutely wonderful as well. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but I can say that Lotty is absolutely amazing! I love her spunk, her loyalty to her grandfather’s memory, and her strength of self. She can certainly hold her own and the mystery her Grandpa leaves her after his passing proves to be right up her alley. Enter from stage right, a trio of trouble-making, gorgeous, foreign exchange students.

Lotty cannot escape the pull of magic that slowly winds its way around her life and into her world. The dangers that come from finding out the truth of her Grandpa’s disappearance and his unfinished tale her are catching up and it’s all Lotty can do to stay ahead of it.

I really enjoyed all of Secrets! The sneak peak into the other realm and what is to come are absolutely amazing. Lotty is so strong willed and I am so anxious to see what happens next. This story is unlike anything I’ve read and I absolutely love that the setting and characters truly feel like their own.

I highly recommend this if you love adventure, magic and knights on horseback!

Book Review: The Daughter of the Pirate King

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller 5/5 stars

Daughter of the Pirate King is a MUST READ for 2017. I was so excited when I received this ARC for review. I love a good pirate adventure and one with a female lead is even better. Stand aside Elizabeth Swan! Debut author Tricia Levenseller weaves a magical tale with swash-buckling pirates, the search for a map and one very kick ass heroine. I could not put this book. This is a stay-up-late, just-one-more-chapter, read-until-the-other-side-of-midnight book.

As any parent to young children knows, sleep as is a precious commodity. Those sacrificed hours  of sleep were absolutely worth it.

It is not your average ya novel staring yet another fiesty heroine. Captain Alosa Kalligan wields her own brand of sass like a weapon while looking like an angel in disguise. She is every bit brave, smart and capable as I would expect from a Captain of her own ship. I absolutely love that even when in distress, this damsel does not need saving. Add in her loyal and kick ass crew with hints of magic and you have a pirate tale sure to set your imagination ablaze!

Each part of this tale is woven through so beautifully. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. Thank you so much NetGalley and Feiwel & Friends for a copy of this ARC. I am eagerly awaiting February 28 so I can finally have a copy of this book in my hands. I implore you my lovely readers, place your pre-orders now! You do not want to miss out on this amazing adventure.

SYNOPSIS: If you want something done right . . .

When the ruthless pirate king learns of a legendary treasure map hidden on an enemy ship, his daughter, Alosa, knows there’s only one pirate for the job—herself. Leaving behind her beloved ship and crew, Alosa deliberately facilitates her own kidnapping to ensure her passage on the ship, confident in her ability to overcome any obstacle. After all, who’s going to suspect a seventeen-year-old girl locked in a cell? Then she meets the (surprisingly perceptive and unfairly attractive) first mate, Riden, who is charged with finding out all her secrets. Now it’s down to a battle of wits and will . . . . Can Alosa find the map and escape before Riden figures out her plan?

Book Review: Gilded Cage

Gilded Cage (Dark Gifts) by Vic James 5/5 stars (Available Feb 14 2017)

This is not your cozy winter read. It is dark, brooding and at times down right chilling. This is a futuristic tale filled with as much magic as science. Gilded Cage takes place in an alternate version of our current world. We have regular humans who make up most of the population. Then there are the skilled, who preside over all and rule England, called The Equals.  All non-skilled are required to spend ten years of their lives as slaves. We follow the fate of the Hadley family as they are sent to serve one of England’s oldest aristocratic families, The Jardines.

This story is filled with political intruigue. There is no limit to what the ruling families will go through to achieve what they want. Political alliances are arranged through marriage, death and chaos. The ruling families are playing a dangerous game and it’s only a matter of time before resistance changes the rules.

I love that each part of the tale is told from multiple character’s view points. I really love the adventure in the slave quarter’s where Luke is sent. He changes so much from being a regular boy to someone so much more. I honestly wasn’t as thrilled with Abi, for all her knowledge and ideals, she really struggles to accept the truth what comes later on in the story. I really hope to see Abi find her inner fire and strength that I know she has in the next book. Of course, of all the Equals I encounter in this book, I am most intrigued with Silyen and his ultimate master plan. I cannot, for the life of me, figure him out or what his end goal might be. Bring on Tarnished City!

Until then I leave you with this synopsis and links to the book and author! Happy reading!

SYNOPSIS: Our world belongs to the Equals — aristocrats with magical gifts — and all commoners must serve them for ten years. But behind the gates of England’s grandest estate lies a power that could break the world.

A girl thirsts for love and knowledge.

Abi is a servant to England’s most powerful family, but her spirit is free. So when she falls for one of the noble-born sons, Abi faces a terrible choice. Uncovering the family’s secrets might win her liberty, but will her heart pay the price?

A boy dreams of revolution.

Abi’s brother, Luke, is enslaved in a brutal factory town. Far from his family and cruelly oppressed, he makes friends whose ideals could cost him everything. Now Luke has discovered there may be a power even greater than magic: revolution.

And an aristocrat will remake the world with his dark gifts.

He is a shadow in the glittering world of the Equals, with mysterious powers no one else understands. But will he liberate—or destroy?

October Book Wrap Up

monthly-book-wrap-up-small

Happy Halloween!! October was a great month for reading and a horrible month for weather. Hurricane Matthew sought to disrupt life here but Floridians are no strangers to the bizarre and downright terrifying thing that is a hurricane. Though it missed Central Florida, where I live, our coastline is rebuilding and the states north of us are still cleaning up the mess. I did manage to read quite a bit while waiting out the storm (yay!) and in between work appointments. Hopefully Florida is in the clear until next hurricane season. Until then….

Keep reading below for my  October book wrap up!
